Continuity of pregnancy care means being cared for by the same healthcare professional or a small team throughout your pregnancy and the postnatal period. It’s designed to build a trusting relationship between you and your care provider, leading to a more personalised and consistent experience. This model of care is increasingly recognised for its benefits to both physical and emotional wellbeing during pregnancy.
Types of Continuity Models
- Midwifery Continuity of Care (Coffs Harbour and Macksville Hospitals) You are supported by one midwife (or a small team) from early pregnancy through to after your baby is born.
- GP or Endorse Midwife Shared Care You see your regular GP for most pregnancy appointments, in partnership with a hospital or midwifery team. At Saige Health, our endorsed midwife can participate in shared care with the hospital and see you throughout your antenatal and postnatal time.
- Private Obstetric Care You are cared for by the same midwife or obstetrician throughout your pregnancy and delivery.
Benefits of Continuity of Care
- Personalised support – Your care provider gets to know you, your health history, and your preferences.
- Improved outcomes – Research shows better birth outcomes and lower intervention rates.
- Reduced stress and anxiety – Familiarity and trust help you feel more confident and relaxed.
- Better communication – Fewer people involved means clearer, more consistent advice.
- Postnatal support – Continuity can continue after birth, supporting recovery and infant care.
